THERE has never been a better time for women in sport.
It has been a long and bumpy road, and not without controversy.
But finally, female athletes are being treated more equally than ever before, and while there is still a distance to travel, things are improving.
In some sports and in certain countries women are outpacing men.
Could you have ever envisaged that the Women’s Soccer – is far more recognisable than the Men’s in the US?
In certain sports where women compete against men, it’s the females who are coming out on top – Rachel Blackmore in horseracing and Fallon Sherrock in Darts are household names thanks to their crushing defeats of male opponents.
There are other household names including Katie Taylor, Megan Rapinoe and Steph Houghton who are putting women’s sports on the map.
So now that more and more female athletes are being treated as Equal in sport, there are still improvements to be made with some sports and teams receiving far less support than men’s teams.
We regularly speak with Women in sport who tell us that while things have improved, they are still not receiving the support that they require, when compared with their male equivalents.
The important thing for all athletes and sports is that the improvements need to continue at a pace that encourages women, and particularly young girls, into sports.
If a girl sees that she is treated the same as her friends and brothers then she is likely to get involved in sport, and are more likely to stay involved than drift away by the time they get to their teens.
Many teams and sports are still aware of how much they’ve still got to do. Providing adequate nutritional support to athletes is something that I am passionate about.
At Totum Sport we also want to help inform and educate athletes of all levels on the great differences that women face in their performance and recovery strategies.
Our bodies have different needs to men, and also individually. If you don’t have nutritional support or would like any information you can contact us and we will help support you whatever your level and whatever your sport.
Remember we are Equal, but we are also Different.
